Learning French in "Pondichéry"
French connection in Pondicherry
In the heart of Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry is a place where French heritage can be felt in the streets. The city benefits from the rich mix of tamil and french culture that creates such a special atmosphere.
There are still around 10 000 French speaking people in Pondicherry, franco-tamil or french people on expatriation, even Indians who practice this language for the pleasure of it.
This special relation the city keeps with France makes it a special place in India to start to learn French or improve one’s level.
French is known to be difficult to learn since its grammatical rules are quite complex. However being introduced to French can be progressive and the wish of many is to have basic knowledge to use it for everyday life and get access to French culture through it.
French classes with Jean-Michel
Our teacher Jean-Michel comes every year to teach French in Pondicherry. He has given classes in Achariya’s schools, for individuals and for groups in Sita.
“Language is a melody you have to listen in order to learn it”
He has developed his own pedagogical approach in order to help Indian people to speak French. His classes are based on phonetical work to enable people to discover the various sounds that compose French language. Jean Michel uses English which is close to French but also reads and writes in Tamil to help his students assimilate these sounds.
French grammatical rules will be introduced one after another. The aim is not to learn them by heart but to understand them fully so that learning and practicing becomes easier after that.
Be confident and dare to speak French
The other point our teacher focuses on is interactivity between students and teacher in a good atmosphere, without judgments but with personalized attention to motivate everybody. Oral practice is fundamental and exercises will be recreational for everyone to be at ease. A break for tea in the middle of the two hours, making some of the classes in parks or sitting together on the floor, there are many ways to enjoy learning and to share.
All this pedagogy requires a strong motivation and implication from students but is proved to be far more efficient for long term memorizing and ability to speak.
To privilege quality over quantity, classes will gather up to 8 students and will depend on levels, from beginners' level to higher levels.
