Bicycle trip in Pondicherry
This article published in the Hindu newspaper in November 2014 presents a new tourist activity available in Pondicherry: The Wake up Pondy Cycle Tour.
This cycle tour package in Puducherry was created by two French women settled in Pondy: Fleur Soumer, director at Sita cultural centre, and Fiona Guerra, who runs a small company My vintage Bicyclette that retrofits bicycles and give them an aesthetic makeover.
Pondy Cycle Tour proposes a short morning pedalling trip for tourists to discover Pondicherry differently. This tour comes from four factors. The first one is the small size of Pondicherry with its narrow lanes and flat terrain. The second one is that bicycle is a traditional means of transport in India. The third one is that cycling around is a great way to assimilate local culture. Finally, it’s to address two prejudices: cycling is out of fashion and a poor man’s transport mode!
That’s why the bicycles used are all customized with a combo of bright colours, a seat with leather and a bell with a creative logo.
The Pondy Cycle Tour starts every morning at 7am. Its duration is 2 hours and is led by a polyglot guide Manisha. The route has been planned to take tourist through cultural locations such as the Goubert Market, the Manakula Vinayakar temple, the Aurobindo Ashram, heritage spots and the Kuruchikuppam village. The tour finishes with a French or south Indian breakfast in Sita centre’s garden.
